Tezpur Police busts car and bike theft racket, 2 arrested

Tezpur: Tezpur police arrested two people involved in car theft. According to the police these people are part of an international car theft racket. Continuing with their crackdown on car lifters, the police conducted raids in several parts of Tezpur and Sonitpur.

"We have formed a task force to nab the bike and car lifters. The task force was formed after we noticed that several incidents of car and bike thefts were being reported from Thelamara, Dhekiajuli, Tezpur and Sonitpur areas. Our crack down will continue," one of the police officials said.

Police recovered 5 bikes from the two arrested persons. The arrested persons have been identified as Dhrubajyoti Sargiyari and Sajan Doimary of Thelamara. One more person involved in the racket, Pranab Bonia of Gohpur is absconding, the police said.

Of the two arrested youths, Sajan had admitted to have stolen one bike. He said that he is a daily wage earner and he stole the bike not to sell but to use it himself.

The other arrested youth, Dhrubajyoti has denied being a bike thief. He said that he had returned from Kerala during lockdown. He was working in a company there but had to return home due to lockdown. He said that the main accused managed to flee. He was just accompanying Sajan and was not aware that Sajan is a bike lifter.
