TEZPUR: Tezpur-based scribes on Monday demanded a free and fair probe into the unprecedented arrest of the Dhubri-based reporter of a private TV channel.
Submitting a memorandum to Governor Jagdish Mukhi through the Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur, Manavendra Pratap Singh, the scribes alleged that the Dhubri Police had violated the freedom of speech and press mentioned in the Article 19 of the Indian Constitution.
Seeking the Governor's intervention to the matter, the scribes also mentioned in the memorandum that Rajib Sarma was arrested and allegedly treated as a criminal by the police administration of Dhubri, which was nothing but a gross violation of the right to freedom of speech.
"We condemn such inhuman activities against the fourth pillar of democracy and demand immediate and unconditional release of the journalist," stated the memorandum, adding that the government should take exemplary action against the individuals, including DFO of Dhubri, Biswajit Roy and the Superintendent of Police of the district involved in the entire conspiracy of arresting the journalist for fighting against the anti-social acts in Dhubri district.
