Tezpur University hosts International Students' Conclave

TEZPUR: Tezpur University's International Students' Office hosted the 72nd Foundation Day and a conclave of International students under Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) at the KBR auditorium on Saturday. Around 60 International students sponsored by the ICCR and studying in Northeastern (NER) Higher Education institutions attended the two-day celebrations.
International students studying in various educational institutions of NER, such as Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, IIT Guwhati, Assam Agricultural University etc. participated in the event along with international students studying at Tezpur University.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Chief Secretary of Assam Jishnu Barua highlighted the cultural relevance of Tezpur city and the magnificent history that encircles the beautiful town. Baruah expressed his happiness that the number of international students applying for ICCR fellowships to study at Tezpur University has substantially increased over the time, and that it adds to the cultural prominence of the institution.
He told the august gathering about the objectives of ICCR, its policies, and programmes. "ICCR was founded in 1950 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, independent India's first Education Minister and its objectives are to actively participate in the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes pertaining to India's external cultural relations," Baruah said.
Delivering the speech as the guest of honour, Cherakung Zeliang, IFS and Regional Passport Officer (RPO), Guwahati highlighted his experience of working in different countries. He said that ICCR is playing a significant role in connecting people across countries. He further added that knowing different languages can help breach barriers between people from different regions.
Speaking on the occasion, Madhurkankana Roy, Regional Director of ICCR, NER Guwahati spoke on the role of ICCR in the region and the valuable participation of foreign students in all academic and cultural exchange programmes.
Prof. V.K. Jain, Vice Chancellor, Tezpur University felicitated the guests and said that ICCR is playing a significant role in welcoming different cultures to our nation, while exchanging ours into their lands. He said that India is following the philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' i.e 'The World is a Family.'
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. PK Das, Director, International Students' Office, highlighted the functions and responsibilities of the office. He emphasized the importance of having international students at the campus and various efforts being taken to bring more international students to Tezpur University. A number of cultural and sporting events were organised during the two-day event. An exposure trip to Kaziranga is also being organised for the students on April 10.
