TEZPUR: In an exemplary demonstration of environmental stewardship, Tezpur University (TU) partnered with the Horticulture Section, National Service Scheme (NSS), and National Cadet Corps (NCC) to plant 500 Mahogany seedlings as part of the Amrit Brikshya Andolan programme initiated by the Government of Assam. This initiative, led by Tezpur University, underscores the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.

Tezpur University, under the dynamic leadership of Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh and Registrar Biren Das, took the lead in executing the afforestation programme. The university recognized the importance of contributing to the State’s afforestation goals and actively engaged in planting Mahogany seedlings in two neighbouring villages, Amolapam and Napam. The tree planting initiative witnessed active participation from Tezpur University’s National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC) units. Over 150 students from various university departments enthusiastically joined hands in this noble endeavour.

Dr SS Bhattacharya, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Coordinator of the Horticulture Section, skillfully organized and supervised the programme. Dr Ami Kumar Das, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, played a pivotal role as the Project Coordinator of NSS, ensuring seamless execution. Dr Hitesh Sharma, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education, and Associate National Cadet Corps (NCC) Officer, brought his expertise to the event. Girindra Hazarika, Horticulturist from the Horticulture Subdivision, contributed valuable insights into the plantation process.

The afforestation programme marked a resounding success, with the active involvement of students and faculty members from Tezpur University. The collective effort emphasized the university’s commitment to environmental conservation and community development.
