TEZPUR: A three-day International Conference on 'Workers, Cultural (Re) Production, and the Culture Industry in South Asia' was jointly organized by the Department of Sociology, Tezpur University (TU) and the Cultural Studies Cell, School of Arts and Humanities, Christ University, Bangalore during October 17 to October19.

The conference was inaugurated by Prof. John J Kennedy, Dean, School of Arts and Humanities, Christ University and Prof. Farheena Danta, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tezpur University. Prof. Paul Long, Monash University, Australia delivered the key-note address. Dr Rashmi Sawhney and Dr. Mithilesh Kumar from Christ University along with Dr Amiya Kumar Das from Tezpur University, the conveners of the conference, explained the aim and objectives of the seminar. Various research papers focused on the multivalent ways in which internal migrations across India can transform cultures at both the levels of origin and destination were discussed in the event. Researchers from various disciplines like cultural studies, sociology, anthropology and media studies discussed action-oriented plans, community-based approaches, empirical works and methodological frameworks to understand migration processes as an object of knowledge and social reality. The interdisciplinary nature of the conference papers and roundtable discussions made the effort a great success.

The conference also focused on inter-disciplinary research on migration and contemplated its importance in the light of National Education Policy (NEP). The organizers proposed to organize a series of conferences to continue the dialogue to suggest better policy framework and support the government in effective implementation of various development programmes which are especially meant for workers and casual labourers.
