HAFLONG: Dima Hasao has not only been affected by landslides but also by unprecedented flood in the Tahijuwari area, about 75 km from Haflong on the Haflong-Lanka road.

According to the residents of Thaijuwari, Thaijuwari market, Mojowari, Jonsorhadi etc., they were informed that the River Diyung was swelling and there might be heavy flood in Thaijuwari. Accordingly, they prepared themselves but they never dreamt that the flood would hit them in such a massive way.

The bridge over Lailengdisa was completely inundated and the flood water rose up to 30 feet and the river was forced to change it course. The mighty River Diyung which flows near the Thaijuwari area took unprecedented shape and inundated vast agricultural area, causing heavy loss to the people of Thaijuwari area where at least 105 houses were affected due to flood. Thaijuwari was cut off from the rest of the country for days together and finally now connected to Lanka after the clearance of mud and temporary repair of few breaches. Restoration work from Gujung view point towards Chotowapu is almost done.

At Jonsorhadi, most of the area - mostly agricultural land- remains flooded till date. At least five houses of this village were damaged but the entire paddy land was affected by devastating flood. This year they will not be able to cultivate their land resulting in heavy loss. Vast horticultural gardens with thousands of areca nut plants have been destroyed due to flood.

Local Member of Autonomous Council, Monjit Naiding, with the initiative of Chief Executive Member, N C Hills Autonomous Council, Debolal Gorlosa and Deputy Commissioner Nazreen Ahmed, managed to help these villagers with relief but the sufferings of the people still continue as few villages are still submerged in water.

Many opined that to tide over the crisis, the hill district of Assam will require huge financial help from the government as well as support from the people.
