GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a recent statement over a series of encounters in the state said that there needs to be controversy over police encounters as it will ultimately lead to publicity.

On Saturday 2nd April, the CM while addressing the reporters in Guwahati made the following remark justifying the numerous police 'encounters' in Assam in the last months.

The chief minister stated that 'there should be controversy over police encounters as it will lead to publicity making people aware about the punishment against the crimes.

According to CM Sarma, people must know that there will be zero tolerance for any kind of criminal activities in the state including rape or murder.

It may be mentioned that over the last couple of months there have been many such cases where criminals either died or sustained severe injuries in police encounters.

Notably, as many as 35 accused persons for different incidents have been killed in police encounters in Assam after the BJP government led by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma came into power in May last year.

In addition, by this time at least 99 people approximately sustained injuries in police action while they attempted to escape from custody and some died on attacking police officers.

In a recent police encounter, three suspected dacoits two from Goalpara and one from Kokrajhar district of Assam were killed after they got involved in a gunfight with police officials.

The two diseased identified as Sushen Ali and Shahjehan Ali reportedly opened fire when police tried to stop them while transporting Areca nuts in Goalpara. The duo got injured after police fired back and died on their way to the hospital.

Another person who died in a police encounter on Thursday in Kokrajhar was identified as former NLFB militant Sanjula Warry who headed a team of 10 to 15 dacoits.
