Jamugurihat:
Unidentified miscreants looted the money from the donation box and other items
from a Naamghar (temple) in Sonitpur district of Assam on Wednesday (December
16) night.
The incident took place at a Namghar at Padmapur in
Kusumtola area of Sonitpur. The miscreants broke the donation box and looted an
amount of three thousand, four 'saki gosa' (Lamp-Stand), two pairs of cymbals,
and 12 'gamosa' (Assamese loom woven towel).
Police have been informed about the incident.
This is not the first time that a case of theft has been reported from the area. Instances of theft have been reported earlier too from the same Namghar.
A resident of the area said, "This is the second time the loot case happened at the Namghar, earlier a pair of 'Taal' was looted, however, we did not drag the issue and bought a new pair."
Several temple theft incidents have been reported from across the state in the past few years.
Earlier in November 2018, the astadhatu idol of Goddess Ugratara was stolen from the 'Saktipeeth' Ugratara Temple located near Latasil police station. Miscreants also took away the main idol along with valuables and offerings.
In another incident, the thieves took away two antique
idols and other valuable items from the centuries-old Siddheswar Devalaya
temple in Sualkuchi, Kamrup (rural). On the same day, as many as five temples
in Maligaon area were also looted. However, the police failed to nab the
culprits or recover the stolen items.
In 2019 two cases of robbery at religious places were
reported from the Uzanbazar area of Guwahati city- one in a Namghar and the
other in Hanuman Mandir. The thieves took away two gold chains, two flowers
made of gold, two flowers made of silver, and broke the donation box, and
looted a few thousands of rupees.
