Goalpara: The Goalpara district police on Tuesday arrested three miscreants for moral policing and blackmailing a couple in a village along the Assam-Meghalaya border under the Krishnai police station of Lower Assam.

The trio has been identified as Amiyo Rabha, Apurba Rabha, and Samiron Rabha. A viral video clearly shows that they did not even hesitate to strip off the couple for filming the video and even abused them.

“We have arrested them based on the FIR lodged on Monday evening at the Krishnai police station by the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of North Garo Hills, Meghalaya on behalf of the victim girl,” informed Amitava Basumatary, Additional Superintendent of police, Goalpara.

The accused persons on December 1 allegedly found the couple in a jungle near the border. The girl belonged to the Garo community and the boy to the minority community. They allegedly forced the couple to undress and when they refused, the accused undressed the boy and girl and filmed them in that condition. Later, the video was circulated and became viral.

A source close to one of the victim’s family alleged that the trio had demanded Rs 50,000 for not spreading the video. They paid Rs 30,000 and begged mercy but the miscreants spread the video nevertheless.

Meanwhile, the Goalpara police with a view to taking stringent action clamped several non-bailable sections of prevailing law against the culprits.

“The case has been registered (No. 248/19)under Section 354 (B) / 34 of Indian Penal Code, Section 8 of Prevention of Children from the Sexual Offences (POCSO) and Section 67 (A) of Information Technology Act,” said Amitava Basumatary. The accused will be produced before the court on Wednesday.
