BISWANATH CHARIALI: As many as three persons were killed by animals at three places following which sensation prevailed in and around Biswanath Chariali during the celebration of Magh Bihu.
The incidents led the agitated villagers to set fire a forest office and a vehicle of the department. According to information, a wild buffalo coming out of Kaziranga National Park had created terror at Motok Gaon, Biswanath Ghat under Biswanath Chariali police station in Biswanath district on Thursday morning and killed a villager named Jayanta Das (45). Alleging forest department's inaction to chase away the wild buffalo, a section of the villagers burnt down a part of the Central Range Office, Biswanath Ghat under Biswanath Wildlife Division of the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve and also a vehicle.
Though the forest department personnel started search operation overnight to capture the wild animal and tried to tranquillize, it could not be spotted. After the incident, the animal again attacked one Shukur Ali (55) of Sholmari village on Friday morning, killing him on the spot. The forest personnel arrived at the spot and were forced to gun down the wild buffalo in self defense. Meanwhile, the bereaved families of Jayanya Das and Shukur Ali have demanded compensation from the Government of Assam.
On the other hand, a domestic elephant had gone mad on Thursday in the Panibharal area of Biswanath Chariali and the mahout, Ahmed Ali, was trampled to death by it.
