Mangaldoi: The correctional and reforming initiatives initiated by the Mangaldoi district jail authorities in Assam for its inmates over the last few years has panned out to be fruitful and has not gone in vain.
Arupjyoti Deka, who happens to be a life convict at the Mangaldoi district jail in Assam has graduated from the Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University (KKHSOU), that too with distinction.
Apart from Arupjyoti, two of his fellow inmates in the Mangaldoi district jail in Assam - Dhrubajyoti Hazarika and Ilias Purti, who are also serving life sentences, have also graduated from the same university.
Dhrubajyoti Hazarika and Ilias Purti had appeared in the examination from the study centre of KKHSOU which was arranged in the jail in 2016 and both of them failed to clear one subject each last year by a narrow margin.
Earlier, Arupjyoti Deka not only cleared the Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) organized by the university but he managed to pass with flying colors and grabbed the top spot.
The jail authorities were delighted when they came to know about the rare achievements of the inmates and they organized a function on May 1 to commemorate the success of the inmates.
Dr Leena Saikia of Mangaldoi college, Bhupen Haloi – the coordinator of the university study centre in the jail and a faculty of Mangaldoi college, Manoj Kr Sarma – founder coordinator, Rittik Choudhury – director of another local study centre of the university, Dr Dibya Rajmedhi – medical officer of the Mangaldoi district jail and several others recounted their association with the study centre and its students.
All the three inmates said that they were grateful that the jail authorities provided them with an oppurtunity to study and thanked them from the bottom of their heart. They also offered their gratitude to the teachers for their unwavering support and guidance.
The trio also conveyed their desire to pursue master degrees and sought support from all.
Later, the guests who were present in the function handed over the exam clearing certificates to the trio.
Meanwhile, Ranjit Buragohain – superintendent of the Mangaldoi jail in Assam threw some light on the background of the correctional initiative taken up by the then superintendent Jon Dev Choudhury and others in 2016.
