SILCHAR: This is for the second time since the outbreak of COVID-19 that three Nigerians trespassing through Churaibari border check gate of Assam-Tripura were taken into custody by the Assam police. Quite strange, Tripura police while on their territorial jurisdiction did arrest them but after some time released them and allowed them to cross over to be in the net of Assam police. Their interrogation is on. Around 2 pm on Thursday, the Nigerians came in a Maruti vanguard near Churaibari area. They got down and the van left.

According to information available here, the trio who were brought to the nearest Bazaricherra police station for cross-examination did not have any valid documents including passports with them. The Nigerians showed the second officer of the police station Ajit Debbarma their documents on whiteapps and claimed them to be from Delhi. However, the officer-in-charge was not satisfied and all three identified as Vinspal Sisuji, Cornat Namanit and Alins Sibuji were detained for further interrogation. The role of the second police officer created uproar and questions from public how these trespassers could be set free.

After being in police custody, they would be taken to the district headquarters of Karimganj for being produced before the Judicial Court on Saturday. During interrogation by police, they said they are cloth merchants and came to Tripura on business by train. It is difficult to take their versions on face value. Not long ago before the beginning of lockdowns, an ATM at Karimganj town at night was found heavily tampered with and huge amount of money looted. On the basis of CCTV footage, Assam police arrested three Nigerians from Delhi. Questions making round in public, are these cloth merchants part of that gang?

On March 16, it is to be recollected and as reported in The Sentinel on even date, two Nigerians, Kanu Kingsley and Chinedu, entered Tripura through the porous Kailashahar border from Bangladesh. While moving to Guwahati by a night super bus, they were detained at Churaibari check gate by Assam police and taken to Karimganj police station for interrogation. They did not have any valid documents. They confessed they had travelled earlier to Turkey and Thailand before entering Bangladesh. They are now undergoing jail term at Karimganj.
