BOKAJAN: Amid the prevailing COVID-19 situation, a team of Karbi Anglong police busted a rhino poaching ring and arrested three persons from an undisclosed location under Manja Police Station on Sunday.
Police also recovered substantial number of arms and ammunition, including two AK 47 assault rifles, two magazines and 30 rounds of live bullets and assorted gear like torch and backpacks, from their possession.
Police have identified the arrested persons as Welson Teron (34) of Borpung Sing Teron village under Samelangso PS, Dereshang Rengma (36) and Alo Rengma (29) of Barlangso village under Chaukihala PS in Karbi Anglong district. Alo Rengma is presently residing in Dimapur, Nagaland.
Police officials are viewing the arrest as significant considering the approaching monsoon season which is also the standard time for rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park areas contagious to Karbi Anglong district. Karbi Anglong borders the southern edge of Kaziranga National Park and animals take refuge in this area during flood making them vulnerable to poachers in the monsoon season.
Karbi Anglong police had earlier arrested three members of a rhino poaching ring involved in the poaching of a rhino at the Agoratoli range of Kaziranga National Park. Police also recovered one AK 47 rifle, two AK 56 rifles, one double-barrel rifle, one grenade, 4 live round of bullets and other incriminating documents from their possession.
