Silchar: It is no more smuggling by traveling by bus or bike to do business in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the valley of Barak. The modus operandi of the smugglers indicates they can easily dodge past national and interstate check posts to reach their trade destinations. Three such young men who fell into the dragnet of the alert police last midday at Chirukandi village on the outskirt of this town with 30000 Yaba tablets tell the well-designed tale. They came riding an Alto and two Pulsar bikes, tablets wrapped in 150 packets and concealed inside the car.
But, ultimately the smugglers identified as Ajit Singh, Shah Alam, and Mitu Ahmed Laskar, in the age group of 28 to 35, despite all their smartness, were outwitted by SDPO Lakhipur, Anurag Sarma. Alerted on the basis of a specific input, Sarma laid a trap for the three riders with the police staff of Tarapur outpost of this town. Not long ago the Silchar bypass with its access through Chirukandi was known as a corridor for the smugglers that links NHS 6 and 54, besides the inter-valley roads.
In course of the hour-long operation and the interrogation of the smugglers, one Hyundai Eon, and two motorcycles, Pulsar and Yamaha were seized. The smugglers along with Yaba tablets and the vehicles, two and four-wheelers, were handed over to Tarapur police outpost. The market value of the intoxicating tablets has been estimated at Rs 60 lakh. The irony is that before the news becomes stale, yet another tale of the catch of Yaba tablets will come out. Action will be initiated against the trio as per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Act said a police source.
