Boko: Villagers of Dewsar village recovered Sal tree logs-laden Tata mini truck on Thursday. The truck was coming from Boko on Thursday night under Bamunigaon forest range in Assam’s Kamrup district. They also apprehended the truck driver. Later forest officials of Bamunigaon Range reached the place and seized the truck. According to the villagers, smugglers always use the Agcia-Dewsar road to smuggle timber which come from Assam Meghalaya border to the riverine areas of the Brahmaputra River.
With the illegal smuggling of timbers, coals, sands etc on a rise, it has been a common sight for the trucks carrying illegal goods to be seized by Assam police. Right from the forest officials’ special operations to the city police’s expedition, trucks carrying illegal goods are often being intercepted and seized which is certainly commendable on the part of the police and forest officials.
Illegal timber smuggling is one burning issue that carries a huge threat to the forest industry of the state. At a time, when the forest official and wildlife activists are putting efforts towards saving the nature and the forests, a section of people are destroying the forests. It is easy for smugglers to hide the items or throw them into the river and then escape before arrival of the forest personnel. This has made the forest department to conduct raids against illegal sawmills, wood logs and smugglers in the riverine area of the Brahmaputra in Kamrup district.
