DIGBOI : Top cop of the district Abhijit Gaurav in his statement to Digboi Media on Saturday afternoon categorically denied the incident of Margherita’s minor rape and murder as the case of ‘gang rape’.

In the light of the on-going investigations, evidences and recorded statements of accused and witnesses, we deny the involvement of any more accomplices involved in the commission of the crime along with the prime accused Anan Tati. The wife of the accused who is under police custody has confessed her involvement while disposing the corpse of the minor into the septic tank.

“The investigation is in fast track mode under the direct supervision of DGP Assam. Police have collected crucial evidences which show involvement of wife of accused in disposing dead body and destroying the evidences. From available evidences we have ruled out any possibility of gang rape or involvement of any other person in crime,” shared the top cop.

“The eldest son of the accused however is absconding and we are trying to trace him and would see if he too was involved in perpetrating the crime.”

It is equally noteworthy that the accused Anan Tati in his earlier statements to media at Tinsukia Civil hospital has admitted of having more accomplices with him.

Meanwhile, serving a serious note on few irrational social media and digital media influencers for publishing the details of the minor victim in the case, the SP said that the police has taken a strong cognizance of undesirable act against the media handlers including digital media for violating the provisions governing the act.

It may be recalled here that the Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code 1860 (IPC) prohibits the printing or publishing of the name or any other detail which discloses the identity of a victim of rape.

Moreover, the Supreme Court of India while stressing upon a victim friendly trial has also issued directions for protection of identity of victims of rape and sexual offences.
