DOOMDOOMA/TINSUKIA: The stand-off between Doomdooma-based Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) and the workers’ union has been finally resolved after Tinsukia district administration cancelled the permission accorded to HUL permitting the company to manufacture essential commodities amid countrywide lockdown.
The order vide no TRF.5/2020/PT-II/4 of 29.03.2020 issued by an Additional District Magistrate on Saturday stated that the permission accorded to HUL vide no TRF.5/2020/PT-1/37 of 25.3.2020 and TRF.5/2020/PT-1/62 of 26.3.2020 had been reviewed and in the interest of public safety arising out of COVID-19 outbreak, the permission order was cancelled.
HUL was locked in an imbroglio with the labour union over resumption of manufacturing of essential commodities like toothpaste while forcing the workers to join factory after procuring permission from Tinsukia district administration (published in The Sentinel dated March 29, 2020). The union opposed the move of the management on the ground that the items to be manufactured against which the permission was granted were not COVID-19 mandated.
