TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of a pregnant woman at a private nursing home due alleged negligence of a civil hospital-based government doctor practicing in that nursing home.

Pregnant Mitali Das aged around 35 years and mother of a 14-year old boy, of Nokrai Gaon on the outskirts of Tinsukia town, was operated upon by Dr Gobindo Mahanta at Aditya Nursing Home, Tinsukia on August 29. The woman, after delivering the baby, did not regain consciousness. Dr Mahanta after the operation left for Dibrugarh on government assignment and returned after several hours. The irate family members along with their neighbours created ruckus inside the hospital and later were asked by the hospital authorities in the late afternoon to shift the patient to AMCH Dibrugarh. The AMCH declared her brought dead.

Civil hospital sources said Dr Mahanta had waived NPA and engaged in private practice during off-duty. On August 29, he was off-duty. The nursing home sources said the deceased woman was a patient of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) and was admitted to the nursing home with complications and perhaps died due to stroke. Now the question arises whether the woman was administered with suitable drugs to check hypertension prior to the operation and why the doctor had prioritized a government programme in Dibrugarh rather than attending to a critically ill post-operative patient? Besides, what factors tempted Dr Mahanta to undertake such a risky case at a private hospital instead of the Civil Hospital to which he belongs?

Magistrate Dimpy Bhattacharjee ALRS CO (A) has been asked to submit her inquiry report within 10 days.
