TINSUKIA: Within 72 hours of the Tingrai grenade blast near Digboi, the Tinsukia police, taking lead from various sources, arrested two persons -HirenGogoi and DipenChangmai -and during interrogation they confessed to having committed the crime.

While Hiren Gogoi was picked up from his Lakhipathar residence on Tuesday, DipenChangmai was nabbed on Monday from TamuliBongaonLakhipathar in Digboi. This operation has been considered to be a major breakthrough a day after DebojitDeuri assumed the charge of new Superintendent of Police of Tinsukia as the attackers were unidentifiable other than physical features of the bike.

Superintendent of Police DebojitDeuri told this correspondent that though the bike- Pulsar 220F (without number plate) - belonged to Hiren Gogoi, he was in pillion and lobbed the grenade while Dipen was riding the bike. The police declined to divulge further information but according to sources, HirenGogoi is an over ground ULFA activist and several cases of extortion have been registered in Digboi and other police stations against him.

Initially police were clueless and even announced a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh for anyone giving concrete information. Two persons- Sanjeeb Singh and SurajitTalukdar- were killed in Friday's gruesome grenade attack while two others were critically injured.
