Tiwa bodies declare bandh in middle Assam on November 23

MORIGAON: Tiwa organizations like All Tiwa Students' Union (ATSU), All Tiwa Women Association (ATWA), Tiwa Autonomous Demand Committee (TADC), Tiwa Cultural Society (TCS), All Tiwa Protection Committee (ATPC) and Tiwa Yuba Chatra Parishad (TYCP) have called a series of bandhs in middle Assam on November 23 (12 hours), November 26 (24 hours) and December 5(36 hours) along with a National Highway blockade on December 1 to protest against the alleged wrong declaration of number of Tiwa Autonomous Council reserved seats as well as against the alleged violation of reservation rule regarding ST-dominated constituencies.

The organizations, in a press statement, expressed displeasure over publication of the election notification issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) on November 17. The leaders of the organizations said that the election notification was not done as per law of the Tiwa Autonomous Council. According to the 2005 rectified law of the Tiwa Autonomous Council , at first total 25 constituencies of TAC out of 36 constituencies were reserved for ST. But the State Election Commission issued the election notification by reducing two ST reserved seats, which the leaders said was against the law of TAC.

Besides, before the second TAC election in 2015, it was decided that the reservation against the six seats reserved for women would be based on rotation system. But the State Election Commission announced the TAC election by implementing the rotation system in both constituencies reserved for women and ST, which the leaders reiterated was also against the law of TAC.
