GOLAGHAT: Golaghat district and subdivision administration are ready for the Thengal Kachari Autonomous Council (TKAC) election in four constituencies of Golaghat subdivision and one constituency in Dhanshiri subdivision.

Polling teams, including presiding and polling officials, left for their respective centres on Wednesday from Golaghat Government Bezbaruah Higher Secondary School for the four constituencies in Golaghat subdivision.

A total of 180 presiding and polling officers, including those reserved for voting, have been deployed in the Golaghat subdivision. Each centre will have one presiding officer, three polling officers and one or two policemen. Polling will be held for all the constituencies in the district from 8 am on Thursday. Re-polling will be held on January 22 if required at any centre. Counting of votes will be held from 8 am on January 24.

A total of 13 candidates are contesting in five constituencies of the district. BJP candidate Harprabha Thengal and Congress' Bipin Bora are contesting in 11th Thengal Kamargaon constituency in Golaghat subdivision. On the other hand, Janhvi Saikia of Congress, Shikhamani Thengal Barua of Asom Gana Parishad and Independent candidate Parismita Thengal are contesting for 13 No. Kachamari constituency reserved for women. BJP's Smriti Rekha Thengal, Congress party's Chhaya Thengal and CPI's Bhaskar Thengal will contest in 14 No. Chawdang Pathar constituency. BJP candidate Padmashwar Saikia and Congress candidate Utpal Thengal are contesting in 15 No. Chawdang pathar Doyang constituency.

Congress party candidate Hiranya Bora, BJP's Minali Hazarika Saikia and Aam Aadmi Party candidate Narayan Bora are contesting for 12 No. Gelabil constituency under Dhanshiri subdivision.

The district and subdivision administrations have already made all necessary preparations for smooth conduct of polling. A total of 38 polling centres have been set up for all the four constituencies in Golaghat subdivision. Out of these, 15 polling centres have been set up in Thengal Kamargaon constituency, 8 in Kachamari constituency, 7 in Chawdang Pathar constituency and 8 in Chawdang pathar Doyang constituency. On the other hand, 11 polling centres have been set up for Gelabil constituency in Dhanshiri subdivision.

The total number of voters in all the constituencies of Golaghat subdivision is 20,749. Of these, 10,576 are men and 10,173 are female voters. The total number of voters in Thengal Kamargaon constituency is 8,807. Of these, 4,495 are men and 4,312 are female voters. Out of 3,737 voters in Kachamari constituency, 1,900 are men and 1,837 are female voters. The total number of voters in Chawdang pathar constituency is 4,520. Of these, 2,285 are men and 2,235 are female voters. Out of 3,685 voters in Chawdang pathar Doyang constituency, 1,896 are men and 1,789 are female voters. On the other hand, the total number of voters in Gelabil constituency of Dhansiri subdivision is 3,141. Of these, 1,720 are men and 1,421 are female voters. January 19 and January 20 as well as January 24, the polling days have been declared as dry days till the counting of votes is over. The guidelines issued by the Deputy Commissioner said that the sale, storage and purchase of alcohol will be prohibited in places like Merapani, Gamari, Vishnupur, Kanaighat on the said days as well as in areas under Sarupathar Circle. Violation of this act will invite measures under Section 135(C) of the Assam Excise Act/Rules and Public Representatives Act, 1951.
