The Assam Government has planned a makeover for the Tea Research Institute at Tocklai in Jorhat and is offering Rs 5 crore to develop the entire campus and heritage buildings of the research institute. This project has been brought into action by Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami and is expected to be completed within seven months.
With a huge campus of 39 acres, the Tocklai Tea Research Institute has heritage buildings, laboratories, workshop, tea factory, bungalows and a guest house which were built with the help of the Assam and Bengal governments.
The heritage buildings in the campus are now used as tea research laboratories. There is an 88-year-old Tocklai Guest House which was once used to accommodate British tea planters. This ancient guest house will now be renovated.
The rich heritage, good climatic conditions and geographical locations of the Tocklai Tea Research Institute will make it a prime point of attraction for the tourists and this decision of turning it into a tourist hub will certainly prove to be a good step in near future.
There are plans of making the partnership between Tocklai and other tea tourism enterprises like Kaziranga Golf Resort (Bura Sahib bungalow), Banyan Grove, Thengal Manor bungalow in Jorhat district, the Mancotta chang bungalow and Chowkidingee chang bungalow. Notably, these heritage sites of the upper Assam are already pulling a lot of tourists every year and the Tocklai Tea Research institute too is expected to show good results.
