SIVASAGAR: Sivasagar DTCC conducted a training programme for school teachers of the district on the ill-effects of tobacco on Saturday at the conference hall located in the office campus of the Joint Director (Health Services) Sivasagar. Thirty-one teachers from various government schools took part in the programme.

Delivering the keynote address, Joint Director (Health Services), Sivasagar Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Das spoke about the ill-effects of tobacco as well as its link to cancer and the need to protect the people especially the young generation from it. He also enlightened the gathering about the significance of World Cancer Day which is observed on February 4 every year and called upon all those present to work whole-heartedly to turn Sivasagar into a tobacco-free district. Dr. Dipamoni Hazarika, District Nodal Officer, DTCC, Sivasagar spoke about the burden of tobacco in Assam and also informed the gathering about the work done so far by her department.

Inspector of Schools, Sivasagar Kamal Jyoti Gogoi who was the guest of honour, shared his experience with the teachers on the work he has done to curb the habit of tobacco consumption prevalent among the teachers as well as students during his posting in various districts of Assam and called upon the teachers to ensure that all school campuses maintain a tobacco-free status and no vendors are allowed to sell tobacco products within 100 yards of an educational institution, stated a press release.
