JORHAT: Finance Minister and Guardian Minister of Jorhat Ajanta Neog today held a meeting with a group of people from the villages which had been transferred to the adjoining Golaghat district from Jorhat in view of the delimitation exercise of the Election Commission of India.

On Saturday, the Assam Cabinet approved the inclusion/exclusion of certain villages of different revenue circles from one district to another involving 14 districts along with the merging of four districts which had been newly created with their respective original, undivided districts in view of the delimitation process.

The said decision resulted in protests by people and various organizations across the state, including Jorhat district which would have to part with 38 villages.

The Minister, after holding discussions with the delegations from the affected villages at the Jorhat Circuit House, told newspersons that she had informed that the decision had been taken by the government for the greater interest of the state.

While reiterating Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's assurance to the people given earlier, Neog said that the villagers were told that this was done in the wake of the delimitation process and was just a temporary move.

She said that the villagers were assured of being included under the Jorhat district again after the ECI's delimitation exercise was over and that all government developmental schemes and other works would continue as usual.

She said that she connected the delegates with the Chief Minister over the phone and Sarma also reassured the people that this was a temporary action and was likely to be reverted after six months.

The 38 villages now included in the Golaghat district are mostly in west Jorhat and a few villages are under the Titabar subdivision circle.
