MANGALDAI: How effective is the Transport department of Assam in administrative functions? Though the Transport department is one of the major revenue earning departments of the State, the top officials of the department are not concerned about its smooth functioning!
The Sentinel in its front page news item on May 27, 2020 had mentioned about the poor functioning of the department as District Transport Offices in five districts were running without the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), which included Nalbari district-the home district of the State Transport Minister. But the senior babus of the Transport department significantly took nearly one month to react to the news report published in The Sentinel. Due to no recruitment for past few years, there is inadequate number of MVIs. All the MVIs posted in the districts were given additional charge of the neighbouring districts. Diganta Deka, MVI of Goalpara district with additional charge of South Salmara, joined as the MVI in the office of the District Transport Officer, Darrang on Tuesday with the additional charge of the MVI in Udalguri district.
