BONGAIGAON: In support of several demands, the All India Road Transport Workers' Federation staged demonstration on Wednesday at Bongaigaon in front of the District Transport Office.

Their demands included stopping petrol-diesel price hike, giving relief of Rs 7,500 to transport workers for 6 years and abolishing the new MVI Act, 2019. Talking to media persons, Hareswar Das, Assam State working president of the federation, said that the condition of transport workers was very pathetic. "They do not have income to feed their families. The government ordered them to carry passengers at half capacity but the fares remained the same. The prices of diesel and petrol continue to increase. This is injustice. How will they survive? So we demand that the price hike of petrol and diesel must be controlled and relief must be provided to transport workers during the pandemic," he said. He added that the new amendment of MVI Act was illegal and should be abolished. In this regard, the federation submitted a memorandum to the State Transport Minister.
