BOKO: Massive tree plantation drives were organized at all the airports and its establishments in Northeast region (NER) including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Imphal, Agartala, Shillong, Silchar, Jorhat, Lilabari, Tezu on the 'World Environment Day'. Employees of Airports Authority of India (AAI), CISF personnel, airline representatives, State Forest department's officials and other stakeholders carried out the plantation drives.
Saplings of trees including white jamun, litchi, mango, amla, sonaru, Radha chura, coconut, debdaru were planted at the colonies, office premises, airport gardens and also the open green area of the AAI. Airports Directors of all the airports actively led the tree plantation campaign.
The AAI in NER has already targeted to plant more than one lakh tree saplings in and around the airport establishments starting from March 2020. This green initiative was launched by AAI Chairman Arvind Singh, under the initiative taken by AAI Regional Executive Director Sanjeev Jindal. Tree saplings have been planted by the Chief guests on various special occasions while carrying out various celebrations at the AAI airports and a sapling as a gift is presented to each person present on the occasion as a token after each function to support the cause of a green and healthy environment.
On the occasion, Kamrup rural District Transport officer Gautam Das also distributed tree saplings to media persons, drivers and public at the Guwahati LGBI Airport premises on the occasion of World Environmental Day. He also distributed hand sanitizers and face masks to media persons. During the program, Das urged the public for tree plantations. He also added that due to the increasing carbon monoxide in our environment, people now suffer with various diseases. So, keeping all these things in mind, people should plant trees as much as possible.
