A marendra Nath Roy (popularly addressed as Amar Babu or Sir), a notable scholar, journalist, entrepreneur and social worker of Dhubri passed away at the age of 82 at Medanta, The Medicity Gurgaon, Haryana on July 6. He was born on April 15, 1941 to a prestigious Brahmin business family of Dhubri. His father Trilochan Roy was the co-founder of M/S Khaddar Bandher in Dhubri.

Amarendra Nath Roy completed his schooling from Dhubri followed by high school from Cooch Behar and went on to complete his graduation (B.SC) from Calcutta University. He started his professional career as a Science teacher in Sapatgram Government School. Due to his quest for higher education and avid interest in arts and literature, he went on to pursue MA (Eng Hons) from Gauhati University. Post completion of MA, he joined Sishu Pathshala Higher Secondary School in Dhubri as a lecturer for the senior section of the school.

While still young and at an early stage of his career he had to shoulder the responsibility of leading his family and the newly-formed M/S Popular Stores due to the sudden demise of his father. He seamlessly handled these daunting responsibilities along with his job as a teacher and ensured all needs of his family are met.

He was a father figure to his younger sibling. His entrepreneur skills came to light during these days and the subsequent expansion, growth & success of M/S Popular Stores is a testimony of his endeavours. He further diversified and set up M/S Sanchiyata (Newspaper & Magazine business) and later set up Trilochan Press and Publications.

During his lifetime, Amarendra Nath Roy treasured his role in society and was devoted to the social cause. He was an active member of Lion’s Club of Dhubri. He had served as a secretary and president of the club.

During his entire tenure he had overseen several key activities like eye operations, flood relief camps organized by the club. For the uplift of the society, he also took up the role of a journalist for the Bengali Newspaper ‘Samay Prabha’. As a journalist he stood out for his perceptiveness, integrity and reported with unfaltering professionalism. He went on to become the president of Dhubri Journalist Association. He also played a crucial role as a member of a committee formed by the District Administration during the 1993 riots to spread harmony and peace.

He played a pivotal role in the setting up of Girl’s College of Dhubri where he also served as an honorary lecturer. He was also a member of Banga Bhartiya Songho and Axam Xahitya Xabha. After decades of active personal and professional life in Dhubri, he moved to Kolkata in the year 2018. On his Adya shradha, I pay my tribute and pray to God to grant him eternal peace in heavenly abode!
