TRIPURA: Two Women Arrested While Trying to Smuggle Ganja

AGARTALA: Tripura Police were able to arrest two female smugglers while attempting to smuggle a sizeable consignment of narcotics from the state to Bihar.

Tripura Police carried out the operation based on specific information received regarding their suspicious movement and possible smuggling of narcotics. Based on this information, a police team led by the Superintendent of Police of the North Tripura district of Tripura was able to arrest two women from the Dharmanagar Inter State Bus Terminal. This operation took place on Thursday.

The two women identified as Visakha Devi (aged 35 years) and Reena Devi ( aged 35 years) belonging to the Katihar district of Bihar were apprehended by the police after they were found suspiciously roaming around the ISBT. The police team recovered 21 packets of ganja after interrogating the women who were planning to smuggle the narcotics to Bihar.

This incident proves that the drug mafia in the state is presently relying on women to smuggle drugs and other narcotic substances to avoid suspicion. The state police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 at the Dharmanagar Police Station. They have also initiated an investigation into the matter.

Previously, the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) conducted a joint operation and while conducting the anti-narcotics operation at the Dharmanagar railway station in the North Tripura district of Tripura recovered heroin worth several lakhs of rupees from the Silchar-Agartala passenger train. While a total of 77 grams of heroin in six packets was recovered from a market bag inside a coach of the train, no arrests have been made by the security agencies so far.

The officer in charge of the Dharmanagar unit of GRPS Uttam Kumar Kalai told the media that the success came up during a routine search and they have taken up the case and started an investigation into the incident. The heroin was later handed over to the Dharmanagar District and Sessions Court.
