South Salmara: The District and Sessions court of South Salmara of Mankachar district on Thursday declared two Bangladeshi citizens guilty of entering India unlawfully and sentenced them to jail for five consecutive years.

Biswajit Mahanta, District Public Prosecutor, stated that the court also imposed on them to pay a fine amount of Rs 10,000 failing which will cause the convicted to get imprisoned for another six months.

The two prisoners have been recognised as Niranjan Ghosh and Abdul Hai.

The public prosecutor further stated that the Mankachar police detained Abdul Hai on March 6 2021 from the Behulachar area along the territory of Indo-Bangladesh for the illegal arrival to the Indian border and registered a case number 163/21 against him while the police arrested Niranjan Ghosh for illegally entering India and filed a case number 395/21 on May 25 2021.

The Union Home Ministry recently on July 2022 announced in Lok Sabha that in five years from 2017 to 2022, there have been 2,399 illegal immigrants hailing from Bangladesh found to be using false documents in India. While answering to the queries put forward in the Lower House of the Parliament, Nityanand Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home stated that the blocking of the Bangladeshi locals happened at Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) commanded under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Immigration (BoI).

The MHA later announced that the state governments have been instructed to share the specific particulars of the illegal immigrants who have falsely acquired Aadhar cards for implementing appropriate legal measures. Calling off identification documents like driving licences, voter cards, etc obtained against the law by unlawful immigrants is also a part of the SOP when such illegitimate persons are prohibited from time to time.
