Silchar: A workshop
related to adaptation to extreme weather events was inaugurated at celebration
hall in Silchar on Friday. The workshop was organised by District Disaster
management authority Cachar in association with Assam State disaster management
authority with a goal to reduce vulnerability to harmful effects of climate
change like more intense extreme weather events. At the outset the dignitaries
present on the dias were felicitated with a traditional "Uttorio" followed by
lighting of lamp by the incharge Deputy Commissioner Cachar cum Chief Executive
Officer DDMA, Cachar Jessica Lalsim and Additional Deputy Commissioner Cachar
Sumit Sattawan.
Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Development Commissioner, Cachar, Jessica Lalsim explained the objective and significance of the programme. While addressing the gathering she said, "It is very much important for us to preserve the nature and save ourselves from the adverse effects of the climate we face if this topic is not handled sensibly." She also added workshop like this should be conducted and appreciated on greater scale to spread awareness.
Additional Deputy Commissioner I/c Forest and Environment, Cachar Sumit Sattawan gave the key note address. In his speech he emphasised on the importance of choosing the right path to fight the way of sustainable development with regard to adaptation to extreme weather events.
He said, "If we wish to bring change in our ways in treating the environment then we must change ourselves first. We all have to be together in our urge to save the nature and developing a better future for the upcoming generations." The officer from the forest Department shared his thoughts about the importance to preserve the nature to avoid natural extremities.
Later, a power point presentation was given by the resource persons from Assam University and by State project officer, training and capacity building, from Assam State disaster management authority, a training was also imparted to the participants through a slide show,various segments from the society which include teachers, students, professors, research scholars, departmental officers from all line government departments , members from leading NGOs participated in the programme, stated a press release.
