GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident in Assam's Cachar district, two devotees were found dead under mysterious circumstances amid the massive celebration of Mahashivratri.

The incident took place on Tuesday 1st March in Bhuban Hills which is a 17th century Shiva temple in Assam's Cachar district in the border area of Manipur.

One of the deceased persons has been identified as Bikramjit Paul of 42 years old, a resident of Bilpar area in Silchar as informed by a member of the Bhuban Mela committee.

According to reports, Pual lost his life on Tuesday morning hours at the time when he was climbing up a hilly route moving towards Bhuban Hills.

It is suspected that Paul died due to a cardiac arrest while climbing the mountain to reach the temple and worship on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri.

Police reached the spot after getting informed about the body of a man found lying in strange condition near the Shiva shrine.

Paul was immediately taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) and the doctors at the hospital declared him as already dead.

In another incident on the same day and in the same region, an unidentified woman was found dead near a sacred temple in Bhuban Hills.

It is reported that the identity and other related details of the lady were not known at the time of filling the incident report.

The officials of Kachudaram Police Station informed that the dead remains of the woman were sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for medical investigation and postmortem report.

Officials added that on Monday 28 February and Tuesday 1st March more than 4 lakh devotees gathered at the Bhuban Hills to perform important rituals and worship Lord Shiva at the Mahashivratri festival.

It may be mentioned that Mahashivratri was celebrated with full enthusiasm in different regions across the state on Tuesday after a long gap due to the covid pandemic.
