SIVASAGAR/DEMOW: Sensation prevailed in Sivasagar district after the recovery of the carcasses of two male elephants on Wednesday. The carcass of an adult elephant aged about 29-30 years was recovered from Majumalia gaon, while the body of another elephant aged about 6-7 years was recovered from Gohain gaon.
Locals suspect that the elephants died due to electrocution, while some others suspect that the elephants died after eating crops sprayed with pesticides. Forest officials and a team of veterinary doctors reached the sites after being informed. Samples from the carcasses have been sent for post-mortem.
“We will be able to ascertain the exact cause of death after getting the post-mortem report. As of now, we want to dispose of the carcasses in a proper manner,” a forest official said. Locals also said the dead elephants were part of a herd which used to frequent the area in search of food and had also come on Tuesday night.
