Two extortionists apprehended by Jorhat Police

JORHAT: Jorhat Police apprehended two extortionists who were trying to extort money in name of ULFA (I) from a tea garden executive, Nagen Bowree of Hensua Tea Estate. Both the extortionists were caught when they came to pick the demanded amount of Rs 5 lakh from a hardware shop in Rowriah area beside the KB Road. The arrested extortionsits have been identified as Arbel Karkette (24) and Abhijit Tangla (22) from West Karbi Anglong and Gotonga respectively. Police said that on July 7, a dreaded dacoit from Tekela Gaon area, Prasanta Neog, was arrested along with one .22 pistol and ammunition. He later confessed to the police about their involvement in serving extortion notes at several tea estate offices. Both Arbel, Abhijit and Prasanta were sent to Jorhat Central Jail here. They were booked under 387 with Jorhat PS case number 1624/16.
