GUWAHATI: Lakhimpur police arrested two alleged opium smugglers on August 22.
According to sources, police apprehended the smugglers with a huge quantity of opium from Major Chapori, Narayanpur.
The accused were identified as Mani Kumar Deori and Civil Deori.
The duo was involved with the illicit trading of opium for a long time, sources said. Sources also said that one of the accused, Civil Deori is a local level BJP worker.
Police continue the investigation and claimed some other persons involved in the racket would also be arrested soon.
On the other hand, continuing crackdown against illicit drugs and smugglers, the Assam police have seized a huge quantity of contraband drugs valued at over Rs. 2 crores in Karimganj. Sources said that during a regular checking at Churaibari area, on Sunday by the local police seized banned 40, 000 bottles of Codeine phosphate from a truck. " The worth of the seized bottles will be over Rs.2 crore. We have recovered the bottles from a truck heading towards Agartala," a police official said to the media.
He added that the bottles were found in 250 cartoons that were concealed under another 100 cartoons of fruits.
