GUWAHATI: Two people were attacked by a wild leopard in Guwahati city on the morning of Friday and they had to be moved to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for medical care.

The incident took place in the Fatasil locality of Guwahati, near the Goenka Nursing Home. The two people who were injured in the leopard attack were identified as Suman Kumar Singh (31 years old male) and Munair Devi ( 35 years old female). Suman Kumar Singh was moved to a nearby private hospital but later referred to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital while Munair Devi was moved directly to the same medical facility.

Both the victims are said to have injuries on their arms as the leopard attacked them. While the male victim is said to have sustained injuries on his ears, the female victim suffered shoulder injuries. The condition of both the victims has been said to be stable and they have been kept under observation at the medical facility.

The incident reportedly took place in the early morning hours of Friday. A pet dog, which was tied to the doorstep by its owner was also killed by the leopard with the video being captured by CCTC cameras.

Leopard sighting is not a rare sight in the city surrounded by hills and vegetation on multiple sides but with the recent growth of population in the city, these skilled hunters have found themselves out of both space and food. Known to be one of the most adaptive animals over time, these big cats have changed their primary food source from hunting wild animals to consuming pet ones. From goats, monkeys and calves, these hunters have shifted to domestic dogs and livestock.

Conflicts with humans are however not very common, but they are known to injure people, especially if they feel cornered or threatened.
