Jamugurihat: Two persons died on the spot in a road mishap in Sonitpur district of Assam. The accident took place yesterday (Wednesday, December 16).

The deceased has been identified as Ananta Saikia (28) and Prashanta Medhi (30) residents of Rangachakua, Jamugurihat.

The accident took place around 9 pm at Jamugurihat, Sonipur district while they were out for some work on their bike. The two youth were travelling towards Balipara when the accident happened.

The bodies have been sent to Tezpur Medical College andHospital (TMCH) for post-mortem. It is not clear how the accident happened.

Earlier this year in November a 65-year-old priest who was living in the Durga Temple situated at the bank of the river Jiya Bharali had died in an accident that occurred in Jiya Bharali Bridge at Jamugurihat. The 65-year-old priest was hit by an unknown vehicle while he was crossing the bridge.

In another incident, six persons have died and two were injured in a road mishap that occurred on National Highway-37 at Bhogamur, Dibrugarh district. The incident occurred when they were returning from a marriage ceremony in neighboring Dhemaji district. The vehicle hit a trailer parked on the highway in Lepetkata area in Dibrugarh.

And in Sonitpur district two persons lost their lives on the spot when a truck collided with a tempo at Gajengaguri under Dhekiajuli police station. The police arrested the driver of the truck

According to the 2019 report released by the NationalCrime Records Bureau (NCRB), Assam has recorded the maximum casualties from road accidents which caused 3245 deaths. Due to two-wheeler accidents, 1362 people have died which is over 41%. While around 682 to 285 people also died in accidents while travelling by car or bus.
