TINSUKIA: At a time when the police drew strong hardliners against drug traffickers across the State, two web channel reporters of Tinsukia were caught red-handed by public after they entered Betoni village near Digboi on Wednesday with the intention to consume drug in an opium den. The incident evoked repercussion among the journalist fraternity in Tinsukia district that demanded stringent action against these so-called reporters.
According to reports, two scribes named Suman Kar of Raja Ali Road, Ananda Nagar, Tinsukia and Rakib Basfore in Pulsar bike bearing number AS 23G 4983 were nabbed by public in an opium den at Betoni village near Gopanari Bottling Plant. After they revealed their identity and intention, the local public thrashed them badly before handing them over to the Digboi Police. Prior to this incident, Tinsukia police, led by Superintendent of Police Debojit Deuri, based on public complaints busted several opium dens in the locality on Tuesday and asked the local youths to be vigilant against outsiders, particularly consumers and potential opium buyers. These two reporters were unaware of these developments and went there for consumption, according to police. The investigation was on till filing of this report and the culprits were still in police custody. However, they confessed to having visited the dens regularly for consumption only, though police did not rule out other malafide intentions.
