SILCHAR: The ongoing HSLC examination marks a significant trend as altogether 2016 candidates preferred to skip the examination in the Cachar district. Out of 23,754 candidates in Cachar, 641 skipped the English examination on the very first day of the HSLC examination on March 15. The following two subjects Bengali and Mathematics saw an upward trend of dropouts as 679 and 696 candidates withdrew themselves from the examination halls.

The trend of abstaining from examination had a few reasons, stated a section of teachers. The online mode of education had left a deep impact on a large number of students who found it very tough to re-adjust themselves with the physical mode of education and examination. A section of students thought this year too the State government would repeat previous year's policy of passing the HSLC on the evaluation system. And hence the students suddenly found themselves not properly prepared for the big examination of the career.

According to a few teachers, the students belonging to poor families had stopped studying since the outbreak of pandemic followed by lockdown. The parents failed to equip their children with internet and cell phones to go for online classes.
