ULFA-I suspected to be behind Upper Assam Violence, says Assam Police

Guwahati: At a time when there's widespread protest going in the state of Assam, here's a report stating that the Assam-based insurgent group ULFA-I is suspected behind the violence that took place in the state on December 11 and December 12 as people took to streets to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. It is suspected that the group instigated people and used its cadres to infiltrate into protests.

"There have been indications that ULFA-I may have instigated people in upper Assam. Till it's proven, it will be speculative to say this. But, some movement of ULFA-I has been noticed. Security agencies including armed forces are keeping a close watch," GP Singh Additional Director General Police (Law and Order) said.

GP Singh also mentioned that districts like Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar in upper Assam are places where ULFA-I still has a strong presence.

Other than Guwahati, these were the places where there was large scale violence. While Guwahati has been peaceful for a few days now, some areas in upper Assam still remain tensed, informed GP Singh.
