SIVASAGAR: UNESCO’s ICOMOS expert Lim Chen Sian visited the historic Charaideo Maidam, the first capital of the 600-year-old Ahom dynasty, to inspect the maidam for inclusion in the World Heritage Site on Sunday.

Earlier, both Sivasagar and Charaideo district administrations welcomed Sian on his arrival on Saturday. He then participated in the Furalung Puja organised by the Malungs at Rencheng at the Charaideo Maidam site and also took part in a tree plantation programme at the site. Sonari MLA Dharmeshwar Konwar, former MLA Nabanita Handique, district commissioners of Charaideo and Sivasagar Nibedan Das Patwari and Aditya Vikram Yadav, respectively, officials of the central and state archaeological departments, and administrative officers with special responsibilities from both districts accompanied the expert during the visit.

Additional Director General of World Heritage Jahnaviz Sharma, Director Madan Singh Chouhan, Deputy Superintendent Archaeologist Dr Gajanan L Katade, Assistant Superintendent Archaeologist Dr Kanchanlata Roy, Assistant Archaeologist Dr Neha Pandey, and Cultural Expert of the Union Government Dr KC Nauriyal were also present at the Maidam site. After visiting the maidam, the ICOMOS expert and the UNESCO team attended a PowerPoint presentation on the World Heritage Site. On Monday, he will again visit the Charaideo Maidam to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the core and buffer zones of the proposed World Heritage Site. He will have discussions with local stakeholders and residents later.
