TINSUKIA: The UNICEF-KKHSOU organized a workshop for print-media journalists of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts on 'Impact of Malnutrition on the Children of Assam' and 'Ending Violence against Children', here on Sunday. The HoD (Head of Department), Mass Communication, Dr Jayanta Kr Sarma, Dr Tulika Goswami, HOD, Community Medicine, AMCH (Assam Medical College & Hospital) and Kishor Kr Kalita, Advocate Guwahati High Court took part in the Workshop, which was hosted by senior journalist Mrinal Talukdar, on behalf of the UNICEF-KKHSOU Media Project.

Kishore Kalita highlighted the crime situation against children and also on the measures on how the media can handle such cases. Providing detailed reporting on both the issues can be addressed while protecting children's interest, he added.

Dr Tulika Goswami, from AMCH, focused on the scenario of malnutrition among children in Assam, adding that the NHFS-5 (National Health and Family Survey) showed that 35.3 per cent of children across Assam are stunted; and 21.7 per cent of the children in the State suffer from major long-term problems. Such issues should be tackled at the early stage of the children, added Dr Goswami.

Dr Jayanta Kr Sarma dwelt on the future of media, and the career prospects of working journalists — including the avenues offered by the KKHSOU, besides the crucial role that the media in general can play in protecting the interest of the children as well as the society. Altogether six such workshops are being planned at Dhemaji, Bongaigoan, Goalpara, Silchar and Hailakandi in the next few weeks.
