Guwahati: The Union Home Ministry has asked Assam Home Secretary Ashutosh Agnihotri and Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia to investigate against the media outlets based on the complaint for their role in spreading militant ideologies and actively assisting fresh recruitment of Assam youth in banned militant groups by running loud media propaganda.

In context to it, the Legal Rights Observatory (LRO) had written a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to investigate the role of suspicious media outlets of Assam and their owners, their financial transactions, source of income, possible flow of funds from foreign intelligence agencies and banned terrorist groups to media owners and all other possible aspects related to it.

The LRO in their letter to MHA asked to investigate on these personalities regarding financial transactions and criminal activities under UAPA and NSA Acts.

It has been alleged in the LRO complaint that during the recent outcry over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Northeast many media houses based in Assam started reporting that militant group ULFA has launched a fresh recruitment drive in the state exploiting the unrest.

It said that if the government of Assam continues to ignore their blatant and violent propaganda it will continue to create new militants with fresh blood in Assam and situation will worsen during the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.

It has been further mentioned in the letter that on numerous occasions in the recent past, all media outlets mentioned above have openly professed the need to take up arms to fight against central government and broadcasting propaganda videos of ULFA cadres along with telephonic interviews of absconding ULFA Chief.
