GUWAHATI: Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) terminal to be established at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, near the bank of the River Brahmaputra (National Waterways 2), was officially inaugurated on Tuesday by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. The tourist-cum-cargo IWT terminal's construction is expected to cost 46.60 crores and be finished by February 2024. Once constructed, this terminal will probably be crucial in reviving regional inland waterways transit for both freight and passenger movement, opening the door for more trade and business.

On the other hand, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that, "Under the guidance of Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi , the foundation for construction of IWT terminal at Bogibeel has been laid. This terminal will significantly enhance trade & commerce with neighboring ASEAN countries in coming days"

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) nodal body for inland waterways, will oversee the construction of the IWT terminal, which will be equipped with a number of contemporary amenities. Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Construction Limited is the organisation in charge of carrying out the terminal's construction. Cargo and passenger berths, approach and other internal roadways, transit shed, open storage areas, truck parking areas, and passenger waiting area are a few of the more notable characteristics.

The development of the terminal will play a crucial role in the development of upper Assam and nearby states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland in terms of cargo as well as passenger transportation. It will also lead to increase in eco-tourism, and easing the movement of EXIM cargo with comparatively lower transportation cost vis-a-vis others.

The new terminal could be a key factor in the expansion of the tourism industry, which includes popular sites like Sibsagar, Majuli, Itanagar, Ziro Valley, Pasighat, Roing, Tawang Valley, etc.
