DIBRUGARH: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday took stock of the erosion-hit area of Koilaghat in Dibrugarh and inspected the ongoing anti-erosion works going on there.
The area was recently badly hit by massive erosion with only less than 10 metres remaining for the river to touch the Dibrugarh town protection dyke behind the Dibrugarh town Gurdwara on the AT Road.
The Union Minister, after inspecting the site, asked department officials to expedite the ongoing anti-erosion works and directed them to initiate permanent measures before the monsoon. Now the water resources department has resorted to geo-bags, mega bags and C-type bags and porcupine to control the erosion.
Sonowal said, “I inspected the site of massive erosion at Koilaghat in Dibrugarh and reviewed anti-erosion measures at the spot. The Assam Government is taking all necessary steps to stop the erosion and I urge the officials to complete work before the monsoons. I have talked with Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika regarding the issue. Combined efforts of both State and Central governments will ensure a permanent solution for erosion in the area.”
