New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that despite changes in political and social environment in the state, the unity and relationship amongst the Assamese Hindu society and Muslim society still remain the same.

The Chief Minister said this, while addressing a gathering at the 1st-anniversary program of the Assamese Syed Welfare Trust at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

He further said that the Muslim community has equally contributed in building the social fabric of the Assamese society.

"The Muslims in Assam has always been portraying themselves as Assamese not as Mia. This government is same for Assamese Muslims as it is for Hindus,'' he said.

''They (Muslims) have a specific contribution towards building up the social fabric of the Assamese society and we will have to accept it,'' he added.

Speaking further he went on saying that the society shall remain methodical only when Assamese Muslims take 'Ajan-Pir sahab' as their role model.

Sarma also claimed that there is no difference between the Sufi culture and Assamese culture.

"We were shown two paths one by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and another by Sufi saint Ajan-Pir. Moreover, whenever, I listen to the Ajan-Pir's Jikir and Jari, I don't feel that there is any difference in these two cultures," the CM added.

He also asserted that six to seven generation before, there was no religious differences or in our method of worship.

"In schools we have been taught that both Hindus and Muslims are the children of the same god. Likewise, we participated in their (Muslims) festivals during our school days and notably, if there are no differences in our thoughts, then none will feel there is any dissimilarity between the both communities,'' he said.

''Our identity has always been the same i.e. Assamese and Indian," CM Sarma concluded.
