MANGALDAI: A group of youths of Darrang district, dedicated, devoted and committed for the common cause of the society, has come forward to render service to the society in this hour of crisis. Initially, the members of this group were involved in voluntary blood donation and were able to create a successful movement on blood donation. Realizing the need for a common platform, they formed a non-government voluntary organization under the name and style of 'Unity-We the Blood Donor' on May 12 with Dipak Kumar Deka as the president and Subrata Sil as the secretary while eminent blood donor and social activist Shekhar Mazumdar has been nominated as the adviser.
With their whole-hearted involvement in creating awareness on blood donation, within a short period they became a very familiar name in the entire district. With the proper use of the social media and Whatsapp, they extended their yeomen's service in Golaghat and Guwahati with the active involvement of like-minded youths of the locality.
Within a very short span of two months, they came up with voluntary blood donors to donate 120 units of bloods to needy patients, mostly belonging to the economically weaker section. Few days back, in response to an appeal on Facebook, this group arranged for the required blood units for a very poor patient in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
The members of 'Unity-We the Blood Donors', on seeing the poor plight of the flood-affected villagers, extended a helping hand to the people in distress in different flood-affected areas of the district. They offered tea and food items, drinking water and biscuits to the flood-affected people at Block Chowk, Industry Chowk, Solpam, Lokrai, Gerimari and Garubandha and also evacuated the stranded flood-affected people even in Mangaldai town. At present, as many as 300 young and energetic youth have joined the organization as active volunteers.
