UPPL questions BPF’s stand on demand of creating Udalguri ST Parliamentary Constituency

KOKRAJHAR: United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on Monday questioned the stand of BPF on their demand for creating Udalguri Parliamentary Constituency reserved for ST and demanded apology for unfavourable remarks on UPPL president and CEM of BTR Pramod Boro.

In a press meet held at UPPL office on Monday, the general secretary of the party Raju Kr. Narzary said the BPF staged four-hour demonstration in Udalguri and Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar on July 1 demanding the creation of Udalguri Parliamentary Constituency reserved for ST. BPF president Hagrama Mohilary led the sit-in- demonstration in Gossaigaon but surprisingly, they have withdrawn the memorandum submitted to the Election Commission for the reason best known to them, he said adding that the BPF was trying to take political mileage by staging drama of demonstration. He said the demand for 2nd parliamentary constituency in BTC reserved for ST by BPF was not in their agenda for which they have withdrawn the memorandum in Kokrajhar just after two days. He also said there was no guarantee that they will withdraw the same memorandum in Udalguri.

Narzary said BPF president Hagrama Mohilary has blamed UPPL president and CEM of BTR Pramod Boro saying that the UPPL had not taken initiative to pressurize the EC to create Udalguri as 2nd parliamentary constituency reserved for ST in BTC despite being in power in the council. He said Mohilary should be aware of the fact that it was UPPL who submitted memorandum demanding the creation of Udalguri as new parliamentary constituency reserved for ST.

He also quoted Mohilary as saying that Pramod Boro should convene a cabinet meeting on the issue of delimitation in BTC and send cabinet resolution demanding 2nd parliamentary constituency in Udalguri reserved for ST to EC but it was the same BPF which did not convene cabinet meeting in the council to raise the same demand during delimitation draft of constituencies in 2007 while Mohilary himself was the CEM of BTC. He also reiterated that the BPF did not want changes of constituencies in BTC. He asked the BPF not to play blame game but to come with a clear stand on the issue. He further said since it is a draft there could be many changes in the last hearing on the delimitation on July 11 where the UPPL will put forward their demand.
