KOKRAJHAR: United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) on Saturday assured the people of the region that the party would re-establish democracy and good governance in BTR if it comes to power after the forthcoming BTC election.

Addressing a huge public gathering held at Binyakhata playground in Gossaigaon subdivision on Saturday, the president of the UPPL, Promod Boro said the people of the region were looking for a change in BTC and it had become crystal clear that the UPPL would form the government in the council by getting absolute majority. He said the people of the region had witnessed rampant corruption, nepotism, favouritism and dictatorship in the last 17 years. He also said that the time had come to give a fitting reply to the Bodoland People's Front (BPF).

Boro said that the people of the region had witnessed communal clashes from time to time due to mishandling by the BPF. "The people of the region want peace and progress in all spheres and our party will not deprive the communities of constitutional benefits, jobs or developmental schemes," he said, adding that they would take all communities into confidence. He alleged that there had been massive corruption right from MGNREGA, PMAY, job card and other schemes in the last 17 years which needed to be rooted out. He promised that the UPPL would never allow corrupt practices and nepotism. He assured that land rights would prevail for all and landless people would be provided land pattas if the UPPL came to power.

On the BTC election, he said that the State Election Commission should hold the council election as early as possible while maintaining COVID-19 protocol as elections were being held everywhere else in the world. He also said the UPPL would win in at least 30 seats. The meeting was chaired by Jiren Basumatary, vice-president of the UPPL, and was also addressed by former Rajya Sabha MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma and other party leaders.
