An uprooted tree killed a man in North Lakhimpur town of the Lakhimpur district on Wednesday while several persons sustained injuries in the incident. The deceased has been identified as Zamaluddin, aged around 60, who is a street vendor and a resident of Khelmati, Ward No. 14(A) of the town.

LAKHIMPUR: An uprooted tree killed a man in North Lakhimpur town of the Lakhimpur district on Wednesday while several persons sustained injuries in the incident. The deceased has been identified as Zamaluddin, aged around 60, who is a street vendor and a resident of Khelmati, Ward No. 14(A) of the town.

As per report, a big and old ‘Shimalu’ tree (Bombax ceiba), located at Khelmati of North Lakhimpur town, near ASTC workshop, got uprooted on Wednesday morning. According to eye-witnesses, the old tree, whose root decayed and base loosened because of incessant rain, got uprooted due to impact of storm causing havoc in the locality. Notably, continuous waves of a storm lashed Lakhimpur on Wednesday from morning hours to afternoon.

In the incident, Zamaluddin, whose pan shop was under the tree, lost his life while Lipi Biswas (19) of Laluk and Dandeswar Kakati (55) of Madhupur, Narayanpur, who came to North Lakhimpur town with their personal matters, sustained severe injuries. They were immediately shifted to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH). They are out of danger at the time of filing this report as per information from the LMCH authority.

In addition to them, some more persons from the nearby area also received light injuries in the incident. The uprooted tree also damaged as many as five light motor vehicles. Local people alleged that administrative officials arrived at the spot around half an hour later. The local people informed the media persons that the district administration and the Forest Office turned a deaf ear to the matter, though they reported about the deplorable condition of the century-old big tree.
